Winter Wreath progress - ring cover

First ring covered, second covering strip ready

First ring covered, second covering strip ready

Incase anyone wants to join me making their own wreath, I’m going to document how i’m getting along with mine.

So firstly, I wanted to cover the polystyrene, firstly for appearance, but also this provides a base to sew the individual embellishments onto.  The wreath forms come in different sizes, but the basic principle is to crochet a rectangle shape long enough to cover the circumference, and then to seam the long edges on the reverse side of the wreath.

My wreath form is 20cm diameter, with an inner ring circumference of 37cm and the circumference of the ring itself being 13cm.  I’m using a 4.5mm hook and Stylecraft Special DK yarn (because I have loads of colours of this in stash).

I found that a foundation chain of 22 chain stitches was enough to go around my ring.  Each row was worked as ch 2 (turning chain counting as a stitch), sc in 3rd stitch from hook, sc in each stitch until end of the row.

For my first wreath I worked these sc rows (in colours Meadow (green), Lapis, Denim and Cloud Blue (blues)) for 37 cm.  This was a tight stretch, so I worked an extra 4 rows for the second one.  The short ends of the strip were then slip stitched together into a ring without twists.

Then wrap the strip around the ring.  I used a tapestry needle to sew the sides together, using a basic stitch through the turning chains of the strip and pulling the sides of the strip together.  Make sure the seam is on the flat (reverse) side of the ring.  You may have to ease the fabric of the strip around the ring to make it easier to sew together, but don’t be afraid to tug and stretch the fabric to fit.

Now onto the embellishments ….
