Granny Square Day 2024 Again: Bijou Square 2

A second quick square designed ahead of Granny Square Day 2024. Again, I haven’t yet had the opportunity to have this tested, but it is relatively straightforward. However if you find any errors, please comment and I’ll get them fixed.

If you follow the BAMCAL, this one is also equivalent to a 6 inch square in Worsted weight yarn, with 19 sts per side at the end; but use your favourite yarn and hook combination.

Abbreviations (US terminology):

ch - chain stitch

ch-sp - chain space

dc - double crochet

2dcCL - {yarn over, insert hook into st, yarn over and pull through st, yarn over and pull through 2 loops}, repeat, yarn over and pull through 3 loops

FPsc - front post single crochet

sc - single crochet

sl st - slip stitch

st(s) - stitch(es)

Set-up: Colour A: ch 4, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: ch 1, (does not count as st), 8 sc into ring, sl st to first st to join. [8 sc]

Rnd 2: ch 2, (counts as first hdc), hdc in same st, {2hdc in next st}, repeat from { to } 6 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [16 hdc]

Rnd 3: Colour B: {2dcCL, ch 1}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [16 2dcCL, 16 ch-sp]

Rnd 4: Colour C: {FPsc around CL, sc in ch-sp}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join. [16 FPsc, 16 sc]

Rnd 5: {2dcCL, ch 2, sk 1}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [16 2dcCL, 16 ch-sp]

Rnd 6: Colour B: {FPsc around CL, ch 1, 2dcCL in the st left unworked on previous rnd, ch 1}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [16 FPsc, 16 2dcCL, 32 ch-sp]

Rnd 7: Colour C: {FPsc around FPsc, ch 2, FPsc around CL, ch 2}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [32 FPsc, 32 ch-sp]

Rnd 8: Colour D: {working behind rnd 7, sc in top of Rnd 6 CL, ch 2, sk (ch-sp, FPsc, ch-sp)}, repeat from { to } 15 more times, sl st to first st to join, sl into ch-sp. [16 sc, 16 ch-sp]

Rnd 9: {4 sc in ch-sp, 3 hdc in next ch-sp, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-sp, 3 hdc in next ch-sp}, repeat from { to } 3 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn. [16 sc, 24 hdc, 24 dc, 4 ch-sp]

Rnd 10: Colour E: {(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-sp, sk first hidden st, 15 hdc}, repeat from { to } 3 more times, sl st to first st to join. Break yarn and weave in all ends. [60 hdc, 16 dc, 4 ch-sp]
